Tramping the streets of London, going about my daily grind, I've developed a new pattern obsession:
With the manhole covers and caps that descend to a murky underworld of pipes and sewers and cables. Take it from me, once you start, you cannot help but race along the pavements, hoping the next cover will be a gem. Who knew there were so many different designs, that they seem to differ by location, and that their lettering alluded to a bygone time, when Notting Hill Gate was a place of manufacture for goodness sakes, rather than just the dead-eyed home of the rich and famous!
